How to make your own Marble Place mats in 3 easy steps
We’re not all blessed with Marble Counter-tops in our kitchens. But whether its a bargain steal or diy deal, you know I got you! Because who doesn’t love a quick and easy DIY project? Like my mother always said: there is a Martha in all of us (yea she never said that)
Every once in a while I get the urge to create something fun for myself. Aside from making clothes, I realized I have a passion for quick DIY projects revolving around interior – emphasis on ‘quick’. It just so happens that I usually get this urge when I have a lot of other things to check off my to do list. This time though I was simply looking to buy a marble cheese board that I could use both for Wine night as well as my detail shots for Insta (duh! yes I know its so predictable, sue me). To my surprise, they are priced a bit high, especially when you are used to $3 Ikea boards lols…#guilty. So, I impulsively decided to make my own board, which led me to make place mats instead. Further, I did not want the basic rectangle shape but rather a round circle (redundant?). If you decide to make a rectangle or square shape, you will definitely save yourself a little bit of work, as I didn’t realize the circle shape would be a tiny bit harder to cut. Either way, this project allows room for creativity. Make your own shapes, add your own designs, it does not have to be marble, but since numbers don’t lie, it’s safe to say that Marble is the IT design in the style-fashion-interior world right now. If you’ve followed so far, you made it to the shopping list:
- Cork roll sheet
- Marble Adhesive Sheet
- Rotary Cutter (optional)
- X-acto Knife or good scissors
- Foam board or anything you can use to make a template in your desired shape
- Rulers and Pen
- Cutting Mat (optional)
You will also need some sort of weight to place on the mats as they roll up (I have fabric weights, but books work perfectly fine). I do shop on Amazon which usually has the cheaper craft products, but it’s definitely worth checking out Joanns as they ALWAYS have at least two coupons on their website. Note: as for the cork sheet, there are different width, this is totally up to you. Same goes for the Marble adhesive – there are so many options like black granite splash adhesive that’s also super cool and stylish. I just went for a very minimal simple marble, but am looking to get a crazier one some time.
Just follow these simple steps to make your own place mats and be sure to show me your finished products or tell me what you think of these. As usual I would love your feedback.
